I use color and depth of field composition to engage the viewer. I love old architecture, how color and light move over architectural elements and textures, enhancing a feeling of the intangible within a place or thing. It can be beauty, awareness of past events and their effects on the community consciousness, the vibrancy of everyday life in a community, or simply a sense of being. Architecture breathes with the life of its community.

Oil color glazing techniques accentuate color effects and mood. I sketch outdoors or use my own reference photos with unusual vantage points, then work on final paintings in my studio.

My primary subjects are bridges, architecture, urban landscapes, landscapes, and historical sites. Architecture embodies and reflects the people of a community. It can lift up a neighborhood, or bring it down. The issue of inclusion of long-term, current residents, most of whom built the character of their neighborhoods and urban areas, in revitalization efforts is a major focus of mine.   Animal subjects are a bread-and-butter staple.

Originally from southcentral PA, I spent a lot of time growing up in both Seaside Heights, New Jersey and Pa Dutch country depending on my parents' work. I have a BA in Studio Art/Art History from the University of Pittsburgh, 1986. I have had 4 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous juried and nonjuried group exhibitions since then. In 1999 I received the Judges Citation Award from WITF Gallery 33 On The Air. I took some time off to raise my family and have now restarted my career. Current member of the Pittsburgh Pastel Artists League. I work primarily in oils and pastels, my secondary medium is drawing. I have other ideas in the works for experimenting with other mediums later on. Recently, I completed a project for a local startup thoroughbred racing stable, which included business graphics, designs for jockey silks and a custom oil painting.  My primary influences have been my mentors while in college-Paul Binai, Ken Batista, James P. Nelson, Paul Glabicki, Girts Purins, Joseph Shepler, and Phil Rostek. German Expressionism, the post-Impressionists, and Japanese woodblock prints, esp. artists like Whistler, Cezanne, Wolf Kahn, Hopper, F. Church, among others. There are some images that I have copyrighted under my maiden name of Kohr, they are not by someone else.

**This is a poetry book "Music From a Farther Room" by John Hughes recently published. My painting, "Hallway", is featured on the cover. It is available through Amazon. This would be an awesome gift for anyone who enjoys poetry!

I also have a GoFundMe campaign to help with exhibition fees and expenses as I am just restarting the art festival and exhibition aspect of my career after taking 20 years off to raise my family. It's very hard to take from the family budget for festival fees and to purchase the very specific displays required.
